Tea has accompanied humanity for over 5,000 years, ever since its first harvests in China. Yet all these varieties come from one single plant: Camellia sinensis. What changes from one tea to another is the terroir: climate, altitude, soil, and of course artisanal expertise.
The world's greatest tea origins
It is impossible to talk about tea without starting with Chinese teas, its historical birthplace. You will find everything here: delicate green teas, full-bodied black teas, and the famous oolong and pu-erh. Three provinces stand out especially for their tradition and expertise: Zhejiang, Fujian, and Yunnan.
India has established itself as one of the world's leading producers. Darjeeling, grown in the Himalayan foothills, is its most famous ambassador. However, the country also produces Assam teas, prized for their strength and pronounced malty notes.
Japan follows a different path, that of exceptional green tea. Sencha, Matcha, Gyokuro: these names evoke vegetal freshness, a hint of sea spray, and an aromatic finesse that few other origins can match.
Other countries complete this tea landscape: Sri Lanka and its Ceylon teas, Kenya, Taiwan, Nepal, and South Korea, all of which deserve to be better known.
Iconic single-origin and pure teas by Kusmi Tea
At Kusmi Tea, we take pride in introducing you to the world's finest terroirs through single-origin, unflavoured teas. No artifices here: just the pure expression of the tea leaf in all its authenticity.
Darjeeling: the champagne of black teas
Harvested high in the Indian Himalayas, Darjeeling truly lives up to its name. It reveals genuine elegance, floral notes, and a hint of muscatel that give it all its character. A refined tea to savour in the morning as well as in the late afternoon.
Gunpowder: the essential Chinese green tea
Gunpowder gets its name from its leaves rolled into small pellets that resemble gunpowder. Once brewed, it yields a fresh, slightly vegetal liquor with a subtle mineral note. It is also the traditional base for mint tea, popular for its briskness and clean taste.
Sencha: the benchmark Japanese green tea
In Japan, Sencha is a true classic. Vegetal freshness, grassy notes, and a gentle sweetness on the finish: it is a well-balanced tea, perfect for anyone discovering or deepening their passion for Japanese green teas.
Assam: an intense, generous black tea
Hailing from north-eastern India, this black tea does not hold back: full-bodied, with malty and woody notes, it brings all its strength to the breakfast table.
The daily benefits of tea
Tea is not just about flavour. It is naturally rich in antioxidants, particularly polyphenols, which help protect cells from oxidative stress.
Its theine content also supports concentration and alertness, delivering a more gradual energy boost than coffee. Green teas are renowned for their high catechin content, while black teas focus more on roundness and aromatic depth.
