What are organic products?
To be considered organic, consumer products derived from organic farming must strictly comply with European regulatory requirements. The specifications include:
● the obligation not to use any GMOs, synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, or weedkillers on crops or soil;
● farmers are required to respect animal welfare;
● at least 95% of ingredients from organic farming for processed products.
Unprocessed or processed agricultural products intended for human consumption, animal feed, and seeds can all be certified organic.
How is the organic farming sector inspected?
To obtain "organic product" certification, industry players undergo regular inspections of their practices by independent certifying bodies such as Ecocert. These organisations are responsible for verifying the traceability of consumer products to ensure their quality from production to distribution. They oversee the implementation of current practices and standards and certify the compliance of consumer products with European regulations according to strict specifications.
On shop shelves, consumer products carrying the European Euro-leaf logo comply with organic farming standards and specifications. The presence of this certification logo is mandatory and must be accompanied by the certifying body's reference number. Organic products may also feature the AB logo, a French standard certifying that 95% of the product's ingredients originate from organic farming methods.
What about imported organic products?
Tea is an exotic consumer product widely grown in countries such as China, India, and Sri Lanka. As such, the tea we drink is inevitably imported. To be sold as an organic, non-conventional product in France, European organic regulations must be respected. Imported tea must strictly comply with the same standards and regulations as consumer products grown in the EU.
