In summary: Infusions/Detox, prepared with organic plants (lemon, lemongrass, ginger, mint, thyme), hydrate and support the natural elimination of toxins, while promoting digestion and energy. They are made by pouring water at 90 °C over the zest or pieces and steeping for 5–15 minutes. They can be enjoyed at any time, even in the evening, without added sugar to maximise their effects.

What is the difference between a detox infusion and a detox herbal tea?

None at all. They are two terms for the exact same thing. Originally, an infusion referred to the brewing method of pouring simmering water over leaves, flowers, or fruit. A tisane, or herbal tea, is the name given to the beverage obtained after infusing the plants. Over the years, however, “infusion” has come to designate the drink itself. But both are entirely plant-based!

What are the health and wellness benefits of a detox infusion?

Infusions are beneficial for the body because they provide hydration while delivering the natural properties of the blended botanicals. Hydration is key to helping the body eliminate toxins. However, beware of the term “detox”, which is increasingly used as a marketing buzzword and often equated directly with slimming, as if it were a diet in itself. This is simply not the case. It is primarily the human body and its organs (liver, kidneys, intestines, etc.) that do the cleansing work. Infusions are merely a way to assist by providing extra hydration. Furthermore, lifestyle plays a crucial role if you wish to detoxify: eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, moderating alcohol consumption, and exercising regularly…

Which detox ingredients should you choose?

We recommend lemon not only because it is rich in vitamin C, but also because it is renowned for its detoxifying properties: it is said to aid digestion and help eliminate toxins. Lemongrass offers very similar benefits, soothing the digestive system after indulgence while promoting drainage.

Ginger is also renowned for its detoxifying properties. It helps strengthen the body's natural defences as well.

How to make a homemade detox herbal tea?

Making a lemon infusion couldn't be simpler: bring water to the boil at 90°C, add a spoonful of lemon juice per cup/person, and infuse the lemon zest for 5 to 6 minutes. To do this, make sure to choose an organic, pesticide-free lemon. Depending on your taste, you can also infuse it with ginger, fresh mint, or thyme, all of which complement the flavours beautifully.

Fancy a lemongrass infusion? You can find this fresh plant in select Asian grocery shops. Peel off the outer layer before slicing the stalk in half lengthwise and cutting it into small pieces/sticks. It takes a good 10 to 15 minutes to infuse into freshly boiled water. Here again, you can add ginger or lime.

Where to source the leaves?

At Kusmi, we recommend opting for high-quality organic plants. You can find them at a herbalist.

When should you drink a detox herbal tea?

You can prepare it throughout the day. Naturally caffeine-free, herbal teas are not stimulating and can be enjoyed in the evening without disrupting your sleep quality. Another tip is to drink one before meals to help increase satiety. Moreover, drinking warm lemon water on an empty stomach upon waking has been featured in beauty and wellness routines for years.

Can you sweeten a detox herbal tea?

Ideally not, as a detox aims to rid the body of toxins and ease the digestive system. Adding sugar gives it extra work to absorb. If you find it hard to drink unsweetened herbal teas, opt for unrefined sweeteners such as acacia honey, maple syrup, or agave syrup.

There is no shortage of homemade detox herbal tea recipes! Enjoy the health benefits of plants during your detox. From digestion to liver support and easing bloating, visible results are guaranteed. For the best quality, don't hesitate to visit a herbalist.
