Iced tea during pregnancy: is it allowed?
Drinking tea is possible for a pregnant woman, provided she does not overdo it; if in doubt, your doctor can advise you! Tea contains one and the same substance, known as either theine or caffeine. It is not prohibited, but its consumption must be controlled so as not to accelerate the heart rate of the foetus.
The caffeine content of a cup of tea is half that of a cup of coffee. A cup of green tea contains on average around thirty grams of caffeine. The French Food Safety Agency advises not exceeding a certain daily amount of iced tea for pregnant women. It is recommended not to drink more than three cups of coffee a day.
Every woman should consult her doctor to determine how much tea she can consume daily.
Iced tea during pregnancy: the benefits of a light, thirst-quenching drink
To enjoy iced tea while pregnant, choose cold infusion. By opting for this slow, gentle method, there will be less caffeine in your drink. This method lets you enjoy the tea’s delicate aromas without bitterness. Above all, this lower caffeine concentration is beneficial for pregnant women.
They can therefore consume it without fear of experiencing unwanted side effects. The advantage of homemade iced tea is also being able to control your sugar intake! Industrial iced teas contain excessive amounts, which can cause gestational diabetes. The same applies to fizzy drinks and fruit juices, which are best avoided during pregnancy. For a homemade drink, you can adjust the amount of sugar or even replace it with agave syrup or honey.
