boire du mate pendant la grossesse

In summary:
Maté contains caffeine, so it should be consumed in moderation during pregnancy. One to two cups a day remain possible while staying under the recommended 200 mg of caffeine, taking into account other stimulant drinks. As every pregnancy is different, medical advice remains essential.

Pregnancy is a special time in a woman's life. Caring for a new life often brings doubts and worries. "What can I eat? What can I drink?", every mum-to-be asks these questions. The answers are not always straightforward: coffee, tea, and mate are among the beverages for which public health authorities provide nuanced guidance. Are you a mate lover wondering if you can continue drinking it while pregnant? Kusmi has gathered all the available information on the topic for you. However, please remember that nothing replaces medical advice, and we encourage you to consult a doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

Drinking yerba mate while pregnant: is it safe?

A moderate caffeine intake, equivalent to 1 to 2 cups of mate per day, is recommended by the WHO to rule out any risk to the baby. This means limiting your daily caffeine intake to under 200 mg.

Do not hesitate to seek advice from your doctor

At the start of your pregnancy, consult your doctor for tailored advice regarding your diet and caffeine intake, among other topics.

Vigilance is therefore key, as caffeine tolerance varies for every woman and each pregnancy is unique. If you have any questions or doubts regarding mate consumption, do not hesitate to ask your doctor or healthcare professional for advice. They will be able to guide and advise you best.

Pregnancy and yerba mate: enjoy in moderation!

The caffeine found in mate is a natural stimulant. It is therefore important to moderate your intake during pregnancy.

Take care not to combine multiple caffeine sources, which could lead to exceeding the recommended limits. The amount of yerba mate consumed should be adjusted according to any other caffeinated drinks enjoyed throughout the day.

Given the limited information available on the effects of yerba mate during pregnancy and breastfeeding, the EMA (European Medicines Agency) advises restricted consumption during this period.

Hydration is essential during pregnancy, and while water remains the best choice, an infusion of mate can also contribute towards this goal. Pregnant women should be particularly mindful of their intake of caffeinated beverages, including mate, to avoid any risk of complications.

The health benefits and effects of yerba mate on the body

Mate offers numerous health benefits for the body:

Mate is prepared by infusing leaves in hot water. Some like to add a dash of milk to soften the flavour, making this infusion a delightful treat for the whole family. However, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional before adding this beverage to your weekly routine, particularly during pregnancy.

It is a natural stimulant that provides energy while reducing feelings of fatigue, thanks to its caffeine content. Enjoying a cup of mate in the morning will give you the boost you need to take on the day.

Mate is a potent antioxidant thanks to its polyphenol content. These molecules help support the immune system and slow down premature cellular ageing.

In addition, mate contains vitamins (A, B2, and B3) and minerals (magnesium, zinc, potassium, and iron).

Finally, mate is believed to aid digestion—providing welcome relief after a heavy meal or for sluggish digestion.

Yerba mate alternatives

Animal sources are rich in iron. For instance, some of the foods highest in iron include black pudding, seafood, offal, and red meat.

Naturally, vegetarian diets are not lacking in iron either. Wholegrain cereals, nuts, pulses (such as lentils), and certain green leafy vegetables (like spinach) are also excellent sources of iron.

Can drinking green tea be problematic for some people?

Rooibos

Among these, rooibos stands out—a caffeine-free red tea from South Africa. It offers all the antioxidant benefits of tea without the drawbacks associated with caffeine. Enjoy to your heart's content!

Herbal teas & infusions

Don't forget about herbal infusions! Linden, verbena, and chamomile make wonderful companions whenever you want to unwind and relax.

How to properly brew yerba mate?

You will need a calabash (mate cup), a bombilla (mate straw), and organic mate leaves. Fill ¾ of your calabash with mate. Cover the opening with your palm and gently shake it upside down so the fine powder settles. Meanwhile, heat your water—the temperature should not exceed 80°C to avoid scorching the leaves or creating excessive bitterness. Once hot, pour the water into your calabash. The brewing time depends on your taste. Place the bombilla in the cup. Once brewed to your liking, it is ready to enjoy!

Drinking mate during pregnancy is fine, but in moderation! Do not hesitate to seek advice from your doctor. By following these precautions, you can continue enjoying your mate safely for your baby. Otherwise, opt for an organic rooibos or herbal infusion instead!
